What is Cardiac Catheterization?

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure to diagnose and treat various cardiac conditions. Using a catheter, doctors can perform diagnostic tests or treatment procedures such as coronary angioplasty. Most patients are awake during these procedures and are given medications to help them relax. Recovery time is quick and there is a low risk of complications.

For example, your doctor may recommend this procedure if you have irregular heartbeats, chest pain, or heart valve problems, among other things.

Cardiac catheterization may be done during the diagnosis or treatment of:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Heart failure
  • Heart valve disease
  • Microvascular heart disease
