Tonight’s concert performance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will be held outdoors in historic Schoellkopf Park on the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center campus, Pine Avenue at Portage Road.
Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor Paul Ferington will lead the BPO in this free performance, which will begin at 7 p.m. The concert is part of the National Grid-Target-Time Warner Cable Summer in the Parks series.
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will get a head start on this year’s Independence Day celebration when the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Schoellkopf Park for a free performance on Wednesday, July 1.
This year’s concert, part of the National Grid-Target-Time Warner Cable Summer in the Parks series, will begin at 7 p.m. in the park, Portage Road at Pine Avenue.
“Last year, the BPO joined us to celebrate the restoration of Schoellkopf Park and the response was overwhelming,” Memorial Medical Center Foundation Corporate Advisor Patricia E. Berggren said. “It was a magical evening and we are thrilled that the orchestra has accepted our invitation to make a return visit.”
Built in 1913, Schoellkopf Park is located on the east end of Memorial Medical Center’s downtown Niagara Falls campus. Its restoration is the cornerstone of a neighborhood revitalization initiative spearheaded by Memorial and the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center under a plan produced in 2005 by the University at Buffalo Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
The restored park, which was completed last year, features new walkways, stairs, and benches, period lighting, plantings and a signature fountain. Designed by award-winning landscape architect Joy Keubler, it now looks much as it did when it was built in 1913 and will be formally dedicated on June 22.
Funding for the project was provided by a New York State Environmental Protection Fund grant, federal community development funds administered by the City of Niagara Falls, corporate and key Western New York foundations, the Auxiliary of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, and private donations raised during a community campaign.
Guests for the smoke-free and alcohol-free concert event should plan to arrive early and bring lawn chairs and blankets. Free parking will be available in the Medical Center ramp, at the Hamilton B. Mizer Primary Care Center and in the surrounding area. Overflow seating will be available on the lawn of the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center.
