Memorial’s P3 Center Initiates Breastfeeding Support Group

September 9, 2022

Niagara Falls Medical Memorial Center’s P3 Center for Teens, Moms and Kids will be initiating a monthly breastfeeding support group starting September 29.

The meetings, which will take place in the Mary Dyster Women’s Pavilion on Memorial’s downtown campus, are open to all who are breastfeeding and will be run by a certified lactation counselor.

Breastfeeding can provide many health benefits to not only the child, but the mother too. Some of the health benefits for babies include a stronger immune system, fewer colds and ear infections, and a strong source of antibodies that are easily absorbed. Health benefits for mothers include a lower risk of breast cancer, endometriosis, diabetes, and faster weight loss after birth. Breastfeeding also increases the emotional health of the baby and parent.

“This is an amazing opportunity to learn about feeding breastmilk while developing connection. This group will be welcoming, understanding and supportive. Explaining the many benefits of breastmilk and navigating disruptions such as formula shortages or return to work.  I look forward to building confidence and aiding choice wherever you are in your journey,” said Jennifer Sierant, P3 Center Supervisor and Certified Lactation Counselor.

This support group is beneficial for both prenatal parents and parents currently with an infant. Prenatal parents can learn the benefits of breastmilk and nursing, feel prepared and empowered before the baby arrives, and receive first hand understanding from parents currently feeding breastmilk.

Parents with their infant can get support with struggles, learn tips and tricks, and gain support in your return to work, communicating feeding choice with childcare, and pumping and storage of breastmilk.

The P3 Center for Teens, Moms and Kids offers free services to women to improve their health and the health of their newborns and children. Services include health needs assessments, physician referrals, care management, and more. For more information on the support group and how to register, please contact Jennifer Sierant at (716) 343-0817 or Jennifer.sierant@nfmmc.org.
