New procedures introduced at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center is now performing two minimally invasive surgical procedures that may be suitable for patients who suffer from gastrointestinal issues including Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Gastroparesis.
Designed to provide relief to patients suffering chronic acid reflux/GERD, the LINX System is a small flexible band of interlinked titanium beads with magnetic cores that is placed laparoscopically around the esophagus just above the stomach. The magnetic attraction between the beads helps the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) resist opening to gastric pressures -- thus preventing reflux from the stomach into the esophagus. LINX is designed so that patients can swallow, allowing food and liquid to pass normally into the stomach. The magnetic bond closes the LES immediately after swallowing.
Gastric Electrical Stimulation (GES)
Designed to provide relief to patients with Gastroparesis, GES utilizes an electrical device, the Enterra™ Therapy gastric pacemaker, to provide mild electrical stimulation to the lower stomach nerves. The mild electrical pulses, which are transmitted through a neurostimulator, encourage the stomach to contract and help to relieve nausea and vomiting. The gastric pacemaker is placed subcutaneously below the rib cage in the abdomen using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Two lead wires with electrodes are implanted into the stomach muscle wall to deliver mild electrical pulses for symptom control. These procedures will be performed by Dr. Bala Thatigotla and Dr. Vikram Vattipally,
For more information about these procedures, please contact your primary care physician or call us at (716) 278-4400.
