So many ways to show you care

Memorial Medical Center has enjoyed a broad base of support from volunteers since its founding in 1895. Today's volunteer force, which includes more than 400 men and women ranging in age from 14 to 90-plus, has donated an average of more than 50,000 hours per year during the last five years.

More than 175 of Memorial volunteers are also members of the Auxiliary of Memorial Medical Center.

Volunteer opportunities abound throughout the hospital and its satellite facilities. As key members of the Memorial team, volunteers meet and greet patients and visitors, staff the information desk and gift shop, operate the CARExpress patient transportation van, and perform a number of other essential tasks.

"The rewards I feel when I have helped someone in need, be it a smile, a kind word, or some other service … are why I enjoy volunteering," said Carol, an Escort volunteer. "The fellow volunteers I associate with are fun, intelligent, and interesting. They have somehow become another family to me."

Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of three hours a week. When on duty, they receive free parking in our attached ramp and a ticket for a free meal in the medical center's cafeteria. In addition, we hold a luncheon each year to honor all our volunteers for the valuable services they provide.

As Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center expands its services, more exciting volunteer positions will be created. There has never been a better time to join the Memorial Team!

We have an immediate need for additional volunteers in the following areas:

CARExpress - Drive minivan and assist patients traveling to and from medical appointments at our facilities. This volunteer effort provides a low cost means of transportation to the community.

Escort - Transport patients within the Medical Center, run errands, deliver mail and flowers to patients.

Information Desk – Assist visitors and patients, distribute passes, answer the telephone, and provide patient information and directions.

Hospitality Volunteer – Greet and assist visitors and patients as they enter the medical center.

Additional opportunities are available in:

Admitting - Greet incoming patients and supervise patient flow into the admitting office. Give directions to visitors.

Baby Pictures - Take photos of newborns, distribute and promote the purchase of picture packages to new parents.

Book Cart - Distribute books and magazines to patients and/or waiting areas of the Medical Center.

Child Care - Assist staff with children.

Clerical/Typing - Assist departments with general clerical work - typing, filing and copying.

Coffee Cart - Serve coffee and tea to patients and visitors.

Diagnostic imaging - Transport patients to X-ray services and deliver films from X-ray vault.

Gastroenterology - Answer telephones, greet patients, serve coffee to patients and family member, assist the nursing staff and provide wheelchair assistance.

Gift Shop - Assist as sales clerk, cashier.

ICU - Serve as receptionist and liaison between ICU staff and families of patients, serve coffee.

Medical Library - Shelve books and log periodicals under the direction of the circuit medical librarian.

Nursing Home - Assist staff and patients, make beds, feed and visit patients.

Nursing Home Activities - Transport patients to activity area, assist with activities and crafts, visit patients.

Nursing Units - Distribute menus, pass food trays and water pitchers, answer patient calls, run staff errands, visit patients.

Occupational Therapy - Transport nursing home residents, assist therapist.

Physical Therapy - Transport patients, assist therapist.

Summit Healthplex - Greet patients in admitting.

Surgery Department - Greet and direct patients, perform light clerical work.

Surgical Desk - Serve as liaison between recovery room staff and families of patients.
