Investigating and Prosecuting Abusive Head Trauma

Responding to increasing numbers of reports of suspected abusive head trauma resulting in death or debilitating physical injury requires cooperation between medical, law enforcement, social services and legal professionals. This training will address child fatality investigations including admissions and confessions in abusive head trauma cases. It will utilize case studies and review the Child Fatality Review Team process in Niagara County.

Leigh Bishop is Chief of the Child Fatality Unit at the Queens County District Attorney's Office where she has served as Assistant District Attorney for 20 years. She has investigated and prosecuted all types of violent crime including homicide, rape, assault and robbery. Leigh specializes in homicide and assault investigations and prosecutions involving infants and children with Abusive Head Trauma. She regularly advises prosecutors around the county on how to prepare Abusive Head Trauma cases for trial. She lectures on the investigation and prosecution of Abusive Head Trauma cases to law enforcement, pediatricians, pediatric specialists, social workers and defense attorneys.
