CAT Scan or CT Scan

Many radiological exams require specific patient preparation prior to the exam in order to ensure that the study is performed in the safest and most accurate manner possible. If you are scheduled for one of the following studies, follow the instructions exactly as written unless your MD says otherwise. If you have any questions or feel that you cannot comply with the instructions, be sure to call the Department of Radiology at (716) 278-4341 or the CT Department at (716) 278-4166.

A CT scan is a diagnostic exam that takes cross sectional pictures of your anatomy. These pictures are reconstructed by a computer to form a series of images.

A CT scan may require the use of contrast media such as barium or IV contrast to better highlight the anatomy.

Day of Exam:
You should have nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior.

If you are taking Glucophage, Metformin, Glucovance, or Metaglip, you will be required to be off that medication for 48 hours after your exam if you were given intravenous contrast for the CT scan.  In some cases, your doctor may want these medications held for 48 hours before the CT scan. You will receive specific instructions from your doctor.

Please notify your technologist if you are allergic to iodine.

CT scans of the spine or sinuses do NOT require fasting.
